How Fire Safe Are Shipping Containers

When choosing a shipping container for storage or modular building use, safety is always a top priority—especially fire safety. At Yellowhead Storage, we understand the importance of protecting what matters most. That’s why we’ve taken steps to test and verify the fire resistance of our container components through third-party certified methods.

One of the most recognized standards in fire safety testing is ASTM E119. This test method evaluates the fire endurance of building materials and assemblies by exposing them to extreme temperatures for a specific period while measuring heat transmission and structural performance.

What the Fire Testing Involved

We submitted both our wall and floor assemblies to Intertek, an independent testing agency, for fire resistance testing. These assemblies were built using materials commonly found in our container units, including steel panels, ceramic insulation, and fire-rated wood components.

During the test:

  • The wall and floor assemblies were exposed to temperatures exceeding 1,700°F (930°C).

  • The test lasted nearly three hours for the wall assembly and over two and a half hours for the floor assembly.

  • Thermal sensors monitored how much heat was transmitted through the other side of the wall or floor.

  • Success was measured by how long the structure could prevent excessive heat transfer and maintain integrity under extreme fire conditions.

What the Results Showed

Both the floor and wall systems performed exceptionally well under ASTM E119 standards. Key takeaways:

  • The wall assembly withstood high heat for over 170 minutes before exceeding allowable thermal limits.

  • The floor assembly held for nearly 3 hours while maintaining structural protection on the unexposed side.

  • Both systems demonstrated a slower rate of heat transfer, helping to prevent ignition of stored goods or interior structures.

These results confirm that our container builds are not just rugged and weather-resistant—they’re also designed with fire protection in mind.

Why Fire Testing Matters for Your Storage

If you’re storing valuable items, business equipment, or using a container as a worksite office or modular space, fire protection becomes critical. Certified fire-resistant assemblies provide:

  • Peace of mind in knowing your items have a layer of protection

  • Insurance benefits, as some providers require or reward fire-rated enclosures

  • Compliance assurance for commercial, construction, or industrial use

At Yellowhead Storage, we go beyond just offering space—we prioritize safety and durability through every stage of our container design. Whether you’re buying, renting, or customizing a container, you can trust that fire safety is built into the foundation.
