What You Should Know Before Buying Your First Shipping Container

Buying your first shipping container is a smart move if you’re looking for flexible storage, mobile workspaces, or secure inventory space. But before you jump into the market, it’s important to know what to look for—and what to avoid. Whether you’re outfitting a construction site or expanding your business storage, a little planning goes a long way.

1. Know Your Purpose

Before anything else, determine how you’ll use your container. Are you storing tools and equipment? Creating a mobile workspace? Shipping containers can be used for everything from long-term inventory storage to customized offices, so knowing your end goal will help you choose the right size, condition, and features.

2. Understand Container Sizes

The most common sizes are:

  • 8×20 ft – A solid choice for most storage and mobility needs

  • 8×40 ft – Ideal for larger items or volume-based storage

  • Other options – We also offer 8 ft and 53 ft containers for specialized applications

Each container type has different space allowances, so measure what you plan to store and consider access requirements before deciding.

3. Choose the Right Condition

Shipping containers come in various conditions:

  • One-Trip/New: Almost brand new, minimal wear, ideal for long-term use

  • Used (Wind- and Water-Tight): Structurally sound, some cosmetic wear, good for standard storage

  • As-Is: May have damage, best for temporary or low-value storage

At Yellowhead Storage, we’ll walk you through your options so you can confidently pick the right type for your budget and project.

4. Plan for Delivery

Containers are big—and heavy. You’ll need a clear, level area for delivery and setup. Our team will review your site access and walk you through placement requirements to make delivery smooth. Keep in mind: mobile rental containers can only be delivered within two hours of our facility, while sale containers can go almost anywhere in Alberta.

5. Ask About Modifications

Thinking of turning your container into something more than just storage? We offer container modifications including shelving, lighting, doors, and more. Tell us your vision, and we’ll help make it happen.

6. Understand Pricing and Availability

Container prices fluctuate due to supply, demand, and material costs. We’ll provide you with a current container sales price sheet or walk you through available inventory. It’s always best to reach out for a current quote.
